Icy Endeavors: The History of the Ice Industry in Greene County

On Sunday March 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. the Ravena Coeymans Historical Society will present its next program. Richard Muggeo will focus on the history of Greene County’s commercial ice industry.  In February 1828, the sloop Ancona loaded ice at Coxsackie and headed down river to New York, beginning what would become Greene County’s iconic commercial ice industry. By the 1850s, river towns from Coeymans to Smith’s Landing had joined in the expanding ice industry.

Born in Astoria, Richard Muggeo was raised on Long Island. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Hofstra University and a master’s degree in reading. Richard relocated to the Hudson Valley in 1974 to teach in the Catskill School District. In 2004, he retired from teaching and now spends his free time volunteering, gardening, raising bees, brewing beer, making wine, reading, and spending time with grandchildren. He currently serves as a trustee of the Greene County Historical Society.

Please join us for this program, open to the public, to be held in the museum on 15 Mountain Road, Ravena.
