Proposed Monument
presented by
Aaron Mair
On Sunday, April 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., the Ravena Coeymans Historical Society will present our third program in a series celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary. Aaron Mair will give a talk on the August 11, 1777 Battle of the Normanskill. Mr. Mair has done considerable research, investigating the involved Rhode Island Regiment which included the freed and enslaved Black soldiers who were part of this regiment. This event in the war would have some significant bearing on the subsequent Battle of Saratoga. Dr. Mair is originally from Peekskill, and was part of the team that raised funds and support for the monument in Yorktown to the contributions of the 1sr Rhode Island and their sacrifice at the Battle of Pines bridge.
Dr. (Hon) Aaron Mair is a retired New York State public health epidemiological-spatial analyst, environmentalist, and 57th national president of the Sierra Club with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for his international climate work from the State University of New York at Binghamton. Dr. Mair is the Adirondack Council’s “Wilderness Campaign Director” responsible for connecting all New Yorkers to the nation’s largest environmental treasure. As a national environmental justice movement pioneer, founder, and activist of the Arbor Hill, NY community in Albany, he was responsible for the creation of the W. Haywood Burns Environmental Education Center and the Arbor Hill Environmental Justice Corporation. He currently lives in Schenectady, New York and works for the Adirondack Council.
Mr. Mair will also discuss his ongoing efforts to memorialize this battle and the men who fought it with a statue in Guilderland.
